The Duke of York is located at the top of the High Street, across from the War Memorial in Saffron Walden, Essex, within easy walking distance from the centre of town.
Saffron Walden is a vibrant, well preserved historical market town of some 16,000 people, conveniently located 15 miles south of Cambridge and approximately 35 miles north of London, with easy access from the M11 or by rail from Audley End station.
The area has been settled since before Roman times and boasts an impressive history. A stone church was built here in 1066, and a castle followed in 1116. Walden Abbey was founded under the patronage of Geoffrey de Mandeville, first Earl of Essex, and is now the site of Audley End House, one of the finest stately homes in the country. In 1141 the town, which was known as Chipping Walden at the time, benefited from the addition of the market which was moved from nearby Newport. Initially the primary trade of the town was in wool, but in the 16th & 17th century saffron cultivation became widespread in the area and the town became known as Saffron Walden. By the 1830's saffron was no longer in demand and had been replaced by over 30 maltings and breweries.
There is plenty to see and do in Saffron Walden - on the common is the largest turf maze in the country, and there is a hedge maze in nearby Bridge End Gardens, a fully restored Victorian formal garden. The church of St. Mary and the Virgin, which is the largest parish church in Essex, dates from the end of the 15th century. The spire which was added in 1832 is the tallest in Essex. The award winning museum, opened in 1835, is one of the oldest in the country and is well worth a visit. The ruins of the castle are in the grounds of the museum. As well as the house and grounds at Audley End estate there is also the popular Audley End Miniature Railway, which features a 1.5 mile woodland journey.
Carnival
Every three years Saffron Walden Round Table puts on a spectacular 8 day carnival as part of their work to raise money for local charities, and 2008 is one of those years. It all happens from the 4th to 12th of July. Check out the 8 Day Weekend website for details.
Whether you are are local or a visitor to Saffron Walden, just passing through, or perhaps returning from a picnic concert at Audley End, what better way to relax and catch your breath than a leisurely lunch or a lively evening at the Duke of York. Hosts Ian and Sarah Warner extend a warm welcome to everyone in their recently refurbished pub. Lunch is served from 12:00 to 2:00pm Tuesday to Saturday and there is always a friendly atmosphere in the evenings. Football, rugby and cricket are shown on a regular basis, or if you prefer playing rather than watching, the dart board is waiting. Keep an eye on the Events section of this site for details of upcoming live music and quiz nights.
